Ozmon and Craver explained Eastern history, philosophy, education, and religion powerfully, giving a general understanding of values and beliefs related to Eastern philosophy but they mention one common belief, which was the focus being on each person’s inner self, rather than the outer world (p 91). As they further explain, within Eastern philosophy, many different passages share common beliefs while also differentiating from one another which has created the foundation of their educational system leading to traditional and rather strict teachings. Traditional views include focusing more on passing wisdom on, observing nature, learning through wanderings and pilgrimages, and maintaining their family structure. “Wisdom springs virtue, right living, and correct social and political behavior (Craver & Ozman, p 115).
Within Eastern education, teachers play an important role in passing on knowledge to students in a traditional form. There is strong significance placed on the teacher and student relationships. Through these relationships, students are connected with a guru, the master, the prophet, or the spiritual leader to gain a deep connection to their beliefs within education including their inner self, the force of nature, and spirituality to lead a good life (Ozmon & Craver). In addition, there is a significance place on sacred literature from the different beliefs and religions, which as Ozmon and Craver summarize, religion views education as a way of “teaching fundamental beliefs and converting others to their ideas” (p 116).
In conclusion, Eastern education philosophy has the foundation of religion, leading to very traditional and strict teachings. Rather than focusing on getting “further ahead” as Western philosophy education, Eastern education is rather about gaining wisdom through spirituality and with nature. Ozman and Craver mention that Westerners see Eastern philosophy as an escape due to the hustle in Western societies. It’s a great study to find meaning in life and connection with one’s self while connecting with nature.
Our presentation was about Eastern Philosophy Education which contained valuable and heavy information about the structure, core beliefs, and values within Eastern Philosophy education. I found this assignment to be extremely valuable in my learning journey as within my teaching practice, I know I will be in contact with students with a wide diversity by gaining this new, and basic understanding, of Eastern Philosophy will help me in meeting my student’s needs in a more meaningful way.
